The mountains to climb for any coach at Rubidoux High School are steep, but Brian Miller took his team closer to the top than it’s ever been before.
Miller is the HSGametime Boys Soccer Coach of the Year following the Falcons’ improbable run to both CIF-Southern Section Division 6 and CIF Southern California Regional Division V championship finals.
“The main thing is how the team came together in the playoffs,” Miller said. “We really started to gel, and I think the boys started to believe in themselves and each other.”
Rubidoux (18-10-3) didn’t win more than three consecutive games until the playoffs, when it ran off a streak of five consecutive shutouts to reach the CIF-SS Division 6 title game.
“These guys just worked and never gave up, and I saw seniors step up that never had,” said Miller, who completed his 11th season at Rubidoux. “This group has a heart and a will to win that I haven’t seen before.”
Despite losing 3-2 to Carpinteria in the CIF-SS Division 6 final, Rubidoux was selected for the CIF SoCal Regionals and won its first two games before running into Caprinteria again in the Division V final.
“I’ll have 13 boys returning that played in the regional final,” Miller said. “You get excited when you see you’re playing all these young underclassmen and they’re competing and they’re competing well.”
